When host Nan Kelley runs through this week’s edition of GAC’s Top 20 Country Countdown, the list will include a new name, Jaron And The Long Road To Love, which represents an artist who’s as stunned as anyone to be on the countdown.

Jaron Lowenstein established himself as one-half of the pop duo Evan & Jaron, which picked up a Top 20 hit in 2000 with “Crazy For That Girl.” Jaron’s twin brother, Evan, has moved down another career path, but Jaron continued pursuing life as a solo act. He was completely surprised when “Pray For You,” an acerbic kiss-off song, became an instant hit with fans.

“Thirty weeks ago, I played this song in Hazard, Ky., [for] not what I would have expected would be my core audience, and they went berserk,” he said at a listening party this week at the Music Row offices of performing-rights agency BMI. “I was like, ‘Oh, maybe it’s just Hazard.’ Then I came back to Nashville 29 weeks ago and played the Bluebird Café, and got the same reaction. Twenty-eight weeks ago, I recorded the song. Twenty-seven weeks ago, WYCD in Detroit played it for the first time and it charted, I believe, at [No.] 56. And today it’s inside the Top 20.”

Jaron follows the single with a complete album, Getting Dressed In The Dark, on June 22, and he’s already got people confused by it. For one thing, The Long Road To Love is not a band — it’s a representation of his frustrating journey with romance. For another, he’s the first to say he’s not a typical country artist. But he’s thrilled that the country audience responded to “Pray For You.”

“I’ve been in different genres and the country music fans are what everybody has always talked about,” he said. “They’re fantastic!”
