With a holiday on the calendar for Sunday, it’s party time for lots of folks, and that includes Kenny Chesney [2], who’s headed to Las Vegas for the Fourth of July weekend.

Kenny’s taken the year off from his typical summer stadium concerts, but he’s still sprinkled his datebook with a handful of shows, including performances at The Joint in Vegas on Friday and Saturday. The venue only holds 4,000 people — a big difference from the tens of thousands that pack the NFL sites he’s played over the last few years — but potentially millions can hear the Friday show live on Kenny’s web-based No Shoes Radio.

It’s not the first time he’s done a two-day stint at The Joint this year. He rolled out a pair of shows seven weeks ago, testing his stamina after taking the self-imposed break from his usual touring schedule.

“I pretty much shredded my voice the second night,” Kenny notes. “We got up onstage in Vegas, and it was feeling and sounding so good, we didn’t wanna go home — and because it’s Vegas, you know, you really don’t have to. We broadcast the first show because we thought people would like it, and the feedback was so great, we figured why not do it again?”

That last time around, Kenny blended his hits with older album tracks and covers of other acts, including Bruce Springsteen, the Violent Femmes and the Steve Miller Band. He also performed “I’m Alive” [3] for the first time publicly. It’s a seat-of-the-pants approach.

“I won’t say we’re the Grateful Dead or even Phish or Widespread Panic, but when we go off the set list and into the land of ‘I love that song, let’s play it…,’ things can go all kinds of crazy places,” Kenny says. “We all love music so much and know so many songs — we can do bluegrass, we can do Van Halen and anything in between. It’s what makes these shows fun for us and, I think, the fans. So I figured we might as well put the show out there for the fans to listen to wherever they are one more time.”

The pre-show with Jon and Tambo starts Friday at 10 p.m. ET. Kenny starts at 11 ET and has no idea how long he’ll play. But he’ll be live that night on No Shoes Radio.
