Carl Edwards turned a lap of 127.762 mph to earn the top spot for Saturday night's NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Air Guard 400 at Richmond International Raceway.
It was Edwards first career pole at Richmond and the seventh of his Sprint Cup career. He became the seventh different pole winner in the last seven races held at Richmond.
Edwards will be looking for his first win since 2008 Saturday night.
"Lately, we have been building this momentum and it has been working and I am enjoying it. The previous eight or nine races have been really good and if we can make the next 11 of them as good as the previous nine, then I think we are going to be really good," Edwards said.
Edwards will be flanked by Juan Pablo Montoya on the front row for Saturday's final race of the Sprint Cup Series regular season.
A.J. Allmendinger, Clint Bowyer and David Reutimann rounded out the top five.
Joey Logano, Paul Menard, Brad Keselowski, Dale Earnhardt, Jr. and Kasey Kahne completed the first ten qualifiers.
Five drivers failed to qualify for the race: Michael McDowell, Todd Bodine, Scott Riggs, Brian Keselowski and Terry Labonte.
Saturday's Air Guard 400 is slated for a 7:30 p.m. ET green flag.
