Gordon Still Believes

Despite going winless in the Sprint Cup Series regular season, Jeff Gordon is confident he can contend for a title and be a factor in this year's Chase for the Sprint Cup championship.

Gordon hasn't won since taking the checkered flag at Texas back in April of 2009, however his consistency over the first 26 races of this season has the Hendrick Motorsports driver still believing in a title run.

"We have a shot and we had a great regular season, and I know we are missing the bonus points but I still think we have an awesome team that can do an awful lot in these last ten races," Gordon said.

"Being up in the points, you know, like we have been allowed us to think ahead a little bit more and put a good game plan together. I feel like we have been doing that. So hopefully that all shows when we get to New Hampshire and get this Chase started. But yeah, I'm looking forward to getting it all started and seeing what we can do."

Despite Denny Hamlin's six wins and four-time consecutive champion Jimmie Johnson's five victories, Gordon doesn't see a clear favorite for this year's crown and thinks the Chase is a wide open field.

"Yeah, maybe there's no clear cut favorite right now, the way the past 26 races have gone," Gordon said. "But I've seen how the team that really is going to go win this championship seems to be pretty clear in the past, anyway, four or five races into the Chase, and I wouldn't be surprised if that happens again this year.

"But certainly right now, the thing that is exciting is that it's really hard to predict who that is going to be. You know, I think it's exciting for the sport right now of how competitive and close the competition is."

As for who he'll have to beat for a title, Gordon is only concentrating on taking care of his own business.

"Right now. I'm only focused on making sure that we are a part of that factor when we get down to Homestead," Gordon said. "Right now, it's kind of hard to get excited about that when you are sitting here being eighth after being seeded second all year long.

"The only way we are going to go see what we have got is get through the first three or four races. You know, there's a lot of tracks that I think we are really good at and there's a couple that we have to get better at. You know, I think that we'll just have to wait and see."
