Steel Magnolia, Katie Armiger on Top 20

Two of country music’s strongest developing acts — Steel Magnolia and Katie Armiger — both make appearances this weekend with host Nan Kelley on GAC’s Top 20 Country Countdown.

Katie’s prepping the Oct 5 release of her third album, Confessions Of A Nice Girl, and she enlisted GACTV.com for a sweepstakes that brings one winner to Nashville for the album release party Sept. 29. The album includes Katie’s song “Leaving Home,” which is currently at No. 12 on the countdown. And the winner has been picked: 29-year-old Kelly Johnson from Columbus, Ohio.

In the meantime, Steel Magnolia still has plenty of reason to be in celebration mode. The act is nominated for Vocal Duo of the Year in the 44th annual Country Music Association Awards, pitted against Brooks & Dunn, Montgomery Gentry, Sugarland and Joey + Rory. It’s particularly amazing when you realize that Steel Magnolia won’t even have its debut album in release until January — two months after the CMA ceremony.

Steel Magnolia’s Joshua Scott Jones and Meghan Linsey were both a bit in shock to get that kind of respect. They found out they’re finalists on the first day of the CMA’s two-day nominations announcements when they went to Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium to perform one song and read the broadcast awards nominees.

“We love playing at the Ryman and to announce the nominees, that was a great honor,” Josh says.

But being nominated themselves?

“I don’t really think that was in the forefront of our mind,” he says.

“We’d almost forgotten, I think, that they were gonna announce this,” Meghan adds. “We were just lookin’ at these [radio station] call letters on the sheet going, ‘OK, we’ve gotta pronounce these all correctly.’”

Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood will host the CMA Awards Nov. 10 on ABC.
