“Reckless”-ness Pays Off for The SteelDrivers

For some musical purists, Reckless might seem an appropriate title for The SteelDrivers’ latest CD, since mixing blues with country and bluegrass could be a risky combination. But for this group of six all-star musicians, it works beautifully and they have been embraced by the bluegrass world and beyond.
This year the group garnered two Grammy nominations: their song “Where Rainbows Never Die” is nominated for Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group and Reckless is nominated for Best Bluegrass Album.
The SteelDrivers are: Richard Bailey, banjo; Mike Fleming, bass/vocals; Mike Henderson, mandolin/vocals; Gary Nichols, guitar/vocals (who joined after former lead singer, Chris Stapleton, left the band); and Tammy Rogers, fiddle/vocals. A quick read of each member’s bio on their official website will tell you just how accomplished each member is in his or her own right.
GAC’s Shanna Strassberg caught up with the group backstage before a show at Nashville’s legendary bluegrass venue, The Station Inn, to talk about how they formed and how their blues-infused bluegrass works. If you’re not already familiar with The SteelDrivers, check out this clip below. And if you’re in the Nashville area this weekend, go see them Saturday, Dec. 18 at The Station Inn, 9 p.m.
