Taylor Swift Missing from Grammy List

At the beginning of 2010, Taylor Swift [2] walked away with four Grammy Awards, including the Album of the Year honor for Fearless. But when the 53rd annual Grammy nominees were unveiled Wednesday night, Taylor’s name was nowhere to be found among the 109 categories.

Stunning? A little, though not entirely. For starters, the eligibility period runs Sept. 1, 2009 through Sept. 30, 2010. Her new album, Speak Now, didn’t come out until late October, so that project is ineligible. “Fearless” and “Mine” were both released as singles, and she had a couple of titles on the Valentine’s Day soundtrack, and any of those could have potentially found a space on the Grammy list. But they didn’t.

The Recording Academy is known for lobbing left-field choices that weren’t necessarily the biggest hits of the year onto its nominations list, and that definitely happened with the finalists for Best Female Country Vocal Performance. Miranda Lambert [3]’s “The House That Built Me” and Carrie Underwood [4]’s “Temporary Home” are pretty obvious finalists. LeAnn Rimes [5]’ version of “Swingin’” is a little odd, though she’s very familiar to Grammy members who vote in the country field but might not work in it every day. You could make the same observation about Jewel [6]’s “Satisfied.” Then there’s Gretchen Wilson [7], whose smoky ballad “I’d Love To Be Your Last” wasn’t even a single, though it’s a pretty good recording.

Whatever you want to read into Taylor’s omission, she’s not likely to get too bummed about it. She doesn’t take any awards nomination for granted.

“I celebrate every nomination that I get,” she says. “And if I don’t get nominated for stuff, I’m still the same [person] I was before I didn’t get nominated. [I’m] still the same as I was before I won Album of the Year. If I hadn’t won Album of the Year, I’d still be the same, so awards are amazing and I love having shelves and shelves full of them. And last year was amazing, but I know that I have t o work really hard for every nomination that I get, and I have to work hard for every extra day that I get to do this. That’s just part of it. You can’t feel like you deserve everything if you’ve gotten it once.”

With or without Grammy nominations in hand, Taylor has plenty on her plate anyway. She starts an international tour Feb. 9 in Singapore, and she’ll be performing in Osaka, Japan, on Feb. 13, the night the Grammys air. Needtobreathe has been announced as a supporting act for the North American dates on the tour, which has tickets going on sale this week in seven markets. Those concerts include her June 25 show at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass., and a pair of performances Aug. 23-24 at Los Angeles’ Staples Center, the same venue where the Grammys will be presented.
