Reba McEntire, Tim McGraw and Faith Hill will take part in the 21st Annual Simply Shakespeare Celebrity Reading of The Merry Wives of Windsor. Every spring, some of the biggest names in entertainment donate their time to participate in a staged reading of a Shakespearean comedy. Co-Chaired by Rita Wilson and Tom Hanks, the reading raises awareness and funds in support of The Shakespeare Center of Los Angeles.
The first performance of The Merry Wives of Windsor is believed to have been in London on April 23, 1597, at a feast of the Order of the Garter which was attended by Queen Elizabeth. The play is about Sir John Falstaff, who arrives in Windsor short on cash. He comes up with a plan to court two wealthy married women. While his plan backfires, the women decide to play along and a story about love, marriage, jealousy, revenge, social class and wealth ensues.
This year’s cast includes Christine Applegate, Kenneth Branagh, Tom Hanks, Faith Hill, Eric Idle, Arte Johnson, Eugene Levy, Tim McGraw, William Shatner (as Falstaff), Martin Short, Tracey Ullman, Sara Watkins and Sean Watkins (formerly of Nickel Creek), and Rita Wilson. The performance is set for Monday, May 9, 2011 at 8 p.m. in Los Angeles, CA.
