Chris Young Loving Life on the Road

Chris Young is on the road more than he’s home in Nashville. Going from sleeping in a bed to a bunk on a tour bus – or the seat of a rental car – required an adjustment, but Chris tells Country Aircheck the real trick to sleeping on the road is waking up. “I’m one of those people who can fall asleep anywhere, but figuring out how to fall asleep in a rental car, wake back up and seem like you hadn’t been asleep before a visit was key,” Chris said.

Being on the road all the time means a lot of meals eaten out. Chris has his go-to meal memorized. “Taco Bell. No. 7 with Diet Coke and mild sauce,” he said. “I don’t know if that’s impressive that I know that off the top of my head or if it’s just sad.”

Pranks are another part of road life Chris has embraced. He recounts a prank pulled by Alan Jackson’s crew as one of the best. “Alan Jackson’s video guys got me really good a couple times,” Chris told Country Aircheck. “The Man I Want To Be” had just gone No. 1, and I was in the middle of playing it the last night on the tour. There were two video screens on the side of the stage and mid-song everybody’s heads went to the left and right. I turned around and they had projected a video montage during the chorus and it was pictures of Homer Simpson, Chuck Norris with his shirt off and RuPaul. It got progressively worse.”

Ever a student, Chris has studied the headliners he’s opened for, taking away tips from all of them. Rascal Flatts in particular has an element he’s especially excited to bring on the stage with him one day – fire.  “Rascal Flatts do a lot with their staging, lights and video and I’ve filed that stuff away for when we can carry that much equipment,” Chris said. “I’m like half a pyromaniac probably. I’m sure once I get to a point, I’ll have some pyro in the show and I’m going to be flipping out about it.”

Chris’ third studio album, Neon, was released last week and came in at No. 2 on the Billboard Country Album Charts and No. 4 overall. Check out our review of Neon!

Chris was also in the GAC studios recently and he took some time to answer fan questions. What day would Chris live over again if he got a chance? Watch our Fan Q&A with Chris Young to find out»
