SLED Chief: SC crime labs backlogged

The State Law Enforcement Division now reports a backlog of more than 45-hundred cases in South Carolina. State officials said the state’s police agency takes on some 350 cases each month, but labs can only handle 200 per month.

SLED Chief Mark Keel says the department has lost some 30 employees due to budget cuts over the last three years, and that priorities are geared towards violent crimes — leaving most of the backlog to property crimes.
