Getting a ticket to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo is harder than finding one for the Super Bowl, but learning about the seven categories of competition just got easier. Eight-time all around world champion Trevor Brazile invited Joe Nichols and GAC’s Suzanne Alexander to his ranch in Decatur, TX to teach them the ins and outs of each category. Their crash course in rodeo, Pro Rodeo 101, will premiere on GAC on November 22 at 9/8c.
Professional rodeo’s seven categories include bare back riding, steer wrestling, barrel racing, saddle bronc riding, tie-down roping, team roping and bull riding. During Suzanne and Joe’s education session, rodeo announcer Jeff Medders gave background information on each category, including the gear needed and the points system used for scoring. Siblings Clif and Tuf Cooper also sat down to explain how they set up a practice area at Trevor’s ranch to resemble the arena at the Las Vegas site of the national finals, right down to the loud music they play to simulate the live environment.
Trevor will attempt to claim his ninth world championship title in December. He admits rodeo isn’t the easiest career path. “There may be a better way to make a living, but there’s no better way to live,” he said. He’s also looking forward to this year’s finals. “When you put that much money and that much talent in an arena, it’s going to be exciting.”
