A Matthews man will be the first of two people to face a jury next Monday as he faces three second-degree murder charges in the death of three people.

23-year-old Tyler Stasko along with 46-year-old Carlene Atkinson face second-degree murder charges after the two were allegedly street racing on North Carolina highway 49 just above the Buster Boyd Bridge, when Stasko’s car collided with that of Winthrop University professor Cynthia Furr.

Furr, her 2-year-old daughter, and 13-year-old Clover Middle School student Hunter Holt all died in the crash.

Prosecutors wanted to try Atkinson and Stasko as one, but the judge presiding over the case separated the trials.

Back in November, a judge denied a request from Atkinson asking to amend the conditions of her bond allowing her to drive to and from work.
