Miranda Lambert has released “Over You” as her next single. It’s a song that holds a special place in her heart — and Blake Shelton’s. The track is a tribute to Blake’s older brother, Richie, who died in a car accident in 1990. The San Francisco Chronicle reports that the pair were flipping through TV channels on one of their tour buses and landed on GAC, which happened to be re-airing Blake’s episode of Backstory. Blake’s father was on the screen discussing Richie’s death and said “You don’t ever get over something like that. You just get used to it.”
“Miranda never had a chance to meet my brother,” Blake told the paper. “I was just a teenager when that happened. So I was telling her about him, what he was like, and we just ended up like we do sometimes, writing a song.”
“We both actually cried while writing the song,” Miranda said. “That’s the only time I’ve ever gotten that emotional writing a song, and him, too. So I think the initial emotion came out right that day, and I think you hear it in the lyrics.”
Lyrics of the song are pulled directly from Blake’s experiences. One line reads “Your favorite records make me feel better, cause you sing along with every song. I know you didn’t mean to give them to me.” Blake received his brother’s record collection — that included albums by Hank Williams Jr. and MC Hammer — after he passed away
“That’s one of the things I got when my brother was killed,” Blake said. “The family gave me all his albums and things like that. I just listened to them over and over again to feel like he was there.”
Writing the song brought Blake and Miranda even closer. Not only was it a major moment in their relationship, it also brought them to a deeper understanding of each other as an artist.
“It was really a great moment between us,” Miranda said. “It was like we moved to a deeper level, not just in our relationship, but also, we respect each other as artists, and being able to write something that personal with each other was really cool.”
Miranda and Blake are both hitting the road on their own headlining tours this January. Blake’s Well Lit & Amplified Tour will kick off January 12 in Toledo, Ohio, while Miranda’s On Fire Tour will kick off the same day in Rockford, Illinois.
