[1]Through programs designed to enhance both the character and knowledge of young women, the Hornet’s Nest Girl Scouts provide services for the community to enjoy beyond just Girl Scout cookies.

Catherine Lambert and Hope Moore of the Girl Scout Hornet’s Nest Council stopped by Palmetto Mornings on WRHI to recruit volunteers for their annual Scouting for the Cure event.

For the past 10 years, the organization has hosted this day-long event that allows girl scouts to design a variety of items to donate to community members who have been diagnosed with breast cancer.

“We make decorated tote bags, a pillow, a journal, a bandanna… and we donate all of those bags to Piedmont Medical Center. They give them to patients who have recently been diagnosed with breast cancer,” Hope Moore said.

Scouting for the Cure not only benefits local breast cancer patients but the girl scouts as well.

“It’s a full day for the girls, they come in and do a lot of fun activities, but at the same time they are learning a lot about the importance of self-exams … its just a very non-threatening way of them learning the importance of early detection for breast cancer,” Moore said.

Moore’s daughter, Sarah, is a seventh grader who has participated in Scouting for the Cure in the past. She said the event has increased her knowledge of breast cancer, as well.

“My grandmother got diagnosed and when I first heard about it I really didn’t know what it was, but with scouting for the cure it helped me learn more things and it helped me understand it a lot better,” she said.

Hornet’s Nest Girl Scouts are currently seeking volunteers to assist with the festivities that will take place at the event and encourage anyone interested to register on www.HNgirlscouts.org.

This year’s Scouting for the Cure will be held on March 24th at Tirzah Presbyterian Church in York, SC.

“It’s a great first entry into girl scouts and to see what we are all about,” Moore said.
