Willie Nelson and Sheryl Crow have been added to the lineup of artists who will perform at We Walk The line: A Celebration of the Music of Johnny Cash concert on April 20 in Austin, Texas. The concert will take place at Austin City Limits Live at The Moody Theatre and pay tribute to Johnny Cash’s life, roots and heritage.
Artists already announced for the event include Ronnie Dunn, Jamey Johnson, Kris Kristofferson, the Carolina Chocolate Drops, Chris Cornell, Ray LaMontagne, Amy Lee, Lucinda Williams, Brandi Carlile, Andy Grammer, John Hiatt, Shooter Jennings and Rhett Miller
An all-star band led by Don Was and including Buddy Miller, Kenny Aronoff, Ian McLagen, and Greg Leisz will back the performers. The concert will be produced by Keith Wortman and a percentage of the proceeds will go to to Charley’s Fund, which helps in the fight to find a cure for the fatal children’s disease, Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.
“Having had the privilege of working with Johnny Cash on a Highwaymen project in 1995, I was able to experience firsthand the incredible spirit and musical gift that lived within Johnny,” Don Was said. “We have an all-star line-up of incredible talent performing the songs that made Johnny a legend, including fellow Highwaymen Kris and Willie. It will be an incredible evening of music of special combinations, duets and jams.”
Johnny Cash would have celebrated his 80th birthday on February 26. The day was marked with the groundbreaking of the Johnny Cash Boyhood Home Project in Dyess, Arkansas where Johnny was born. A series of Johnny Cash projects will be released throughout the year, with the first being Bootleg Vol. IV: The Soul of Truth, a 2-CD, 51-track collection of gospel and spiritual recordings made by Johnny in the 1970s and ‘80s on April 3.
