Simrill standing behind SC’s Castle Doctrine

In the wake of the killing of a Sanford, Fla., teenager by a neighborhood watchman in February, Florida’s ‘Stand Your Ground’ law is getting a thorough review by lawmakers — and here in South Carolina, similar changes could be on the way as well.

State Rep. Gary Simrill of Rock Hill said Tuesday that there’s a bill in the works that seeks to significantly modify or do away with what’s commonly known as the Castle Doctrine — that allows homeowners to protect themselves and their property.

Simrill says that any such bill will receive little support in the House.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reports that lawmakers expanded the Palmetto State’s Castle Doctrine in 2006 — expanding the scope of the law to include store owners defending businesses and drivers in a carjacking.
