Toby Keith is celebrating 10 years of touring the globe and visiting troops by embarking on a five-country, 12-day USO/Armed Forces Entertainment Tour. Toby is traveling to the Middle East to perform for troops and their families, as well as visit remote forward operating bases and bring a little bit of home to our service men and women.
Four days into his tour, Toby has already played for more than 3,900 service members stationed in Bahrain, aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln and other locations. Since his first USO tour in 2002, Toby has traveled to more than 14 countries and participated in nine USO Tours. In total, he has participated in 211 USO shows and meet & greets and played for more than 182,600 troops on more than 100 military installations.
“I can’t believe it has already been a decade, it feels like just yesterday when I first started working with the USO,” Toby said. “I’ve met so many great, brave service men and women over the years and had so many wonderful experiences, that I can barely remember them all. One thing is for sure, I enjoy working with the USO, I love our nation’s troops, and I won’t ever stop doing my part to extend my thanks.”
“The USO considers it a real privilege to have worked with Toby Keith over the last ten years, USO President Sloan Gibson said. “He has such a genuine interest in enhancing the lives of our nation’s troops and is truly among our biggest and most recognized supporters. We can’t thank him enough for all of the support he has shown us over the last decade and we look forward to many more years together.”
While visiting troops in Afghanistan in 2007, Toby saw a need to deliver the day-to-day comforts of home to those stationed far away from main bases and USO Centers. His idea became the ‘USO2GO’program which sends electronics, entertainment, non-perishable food and personal care items to troops stationed at remote bases. To date, 942 “USO2GO” kits have been distributed to 15 countries and more than 600 remote forward operating bases.
Toby not only spends time visiting and performing for military personnel abroad, he also supports them at home. His chain of restaurants offers a complimentary burger and a drink to service members returning to the states. He also visits wounded warriors and advocates for veterans in the media.
Once back in the United States, Toby will get ready for his Live In Overdrive Tour, which kicks off June 14 in Salt Lake City, Utah.
