Winthrop tennis player kicked off team after on-campus assault

Winthrop University tennis player Luca Stanic was kicked off the team Wednesday following an arrest for assault and battery last week.

Winthrop Athletic Director Tom Hickman said in a release Wednesday that Stanic was dismissed, “for conduct detrimental to the team.”

A Winthrop University police report says witnesses saw 21-year-old Stanic punching a 19-year-old teammate in a campus parking lot the night of March 28th, and the teammate was knocked unconscious and treated at Piedmont Medical Center for a fractured nose, a lacerated lip and concussion-type injuries.

The report says while in the hospital, the suspect and the victim exchanged several text messages, where the suspect, “threatened bodily harm” to the victim.

Stanic was arrested and charged with assault and battery and unlawful communications.

Stanic is a native of Boca Raton, Fla. is a political science major.
