Loretta Lynn’s Collaboration “Bucket List” & Thoughts on Today’s Country Music

Loretta Lynn has earned the right to take it easy, but instead of relaxing at her ranch in Tennessee, she’s still touring the country and making music. She talked with Access Atlanta before a recent show about pending new music, who she wants to work with and her life being made into a Broadway musical. She also shared what song she has to play in every set.
You have to do ‘Coal Miner’s Daughter,’” she said. “They’re hollering right off the bat for that one. I tell ‘em, ‘Just wait a minute!’ You just get to where you do some songs because the audience is gonna make you do them. They paid their admission.”
Sissy Spacek’s portrayal of Loretta Lynn in Cold Miner’s Daughter was the first time Loretta’s story was told on the big screen. Now she’s preparing to share her story as a Broadway musical. She hand-picked New Girl’s Zooey Deschanel based on their similar characteristics.
“Back in the day, her and I were about the same size,” Loretta said. “We had the same color eyes. I told her that I was with Sissy for a year before ‘Coal Miner’s’ so if you need me, let me know. I said, ‘Don’t feel bad callin’ me.’”
Loretta released her last album a decade ago, but has plenty of material cut to make a few albums, including a Christmas album and two religious albums. She’d also like to record another collaboration album like she did with Tammy Wynette and Dolly Parton – if she can get everyone in the same place at the same time.
‘Me and my sisters were supposed to record together, but Crystal Gayle is so doggone slow!” Loretta said. ”It takes her 10 years to walk across town. If they want to record with me, they know where I’m at.”
She does have a few artists on her list she’d like to record a duet with. “Me and Merle Haggard are going to do a record,” she said. “I want to record a song with him that he wrote, “Today I Started Loving You Again.” And Alan Jackson , I do love him. He’s so bashful, he don’t give nobody a call. But if he was to change, I wouldn’t like him. I love Garth Brooks , too. Now Garth, he’ll call me, but Alan doesn’t do stuff like that.”
Country music has changed a lot since Loretta first entered the business. She’s still true to her roots but doesn’t dislike the music on the radio now. “Country today is like pop music was 40 years ago, that’s the way I see it,” she said. “But I don’t think it’s a bad thing. I like the polished sound, even though I’m as country as corn bread.”
And if Loretta has her way, fans will be hearing her on the radio again soon. “I want to have more hits,” she stated. “Giving up is for quitters! No one says anything anymore. They need me out there.”
