Keith Urban

AMERICAN IDOL: SEASON 12: L-R: Mariah Carey, Keith Urban, Ryan Seacrest, Nicki Minaj and Randy Jackson on the set of AMERICAN IDOL Sunday, Sept, 16. CR: Michael Becker / FOX.

It’s official – Keith Urban is joining American Idol. After media outlet The Country Vibe reported Keith had said yes back in August, Keith himself has now confirmed he’ll be on the upcoming 12th season. He (along with Nicki Minaj) joins previously announced new judge Mariah Carey and Idol staple Randy Jackson in the judges’ chairs.

“It’s really an honor to have been invited to be a part of the American Idol family,” Keith said. “I’m looking forward to working with everyone and to seeing the same passion that I have for music in all of the participants.”

“Keith is another great addition to Idol — he’s one of the biggest stars in country music and I know that our fans and contestants will fall in love with him,” Mike Darnell of Fox told Entertainment Weekly in a statement.

Keith will be the show’s first country judge. American Idol has turned out several country stars including Carrie Underwood, Kellie Pickler, Scotty McCreery, Lauren Alaina, Bucky Covington and Casey James.
