The Pistol Annies made their Grand Ole Opry debut on Tuesday night. Not only did they step onto the Opry stage for the first time as a band, they were also there to help celebrate and honor Loretta Lynn on her 50th anniversary as a Grand Ole Opry member . As excited as they were to be on the Opry, the band was even more honored to be a part of Loretta’s special night.
“I could die tomorrow and I’ve already been in heaven,” Angaleena Presley said. “I remember coming to the Opry and watching Loretta when I was 17. I was standing in the front row hoping and dreaming I’d be there someday and tonight, she’s going to be in the front row listening to me sing one of her songs. I’m just so tickled to be here. This is it for me.”
“Everybody says she’s one of their inspirations but she really truly is for us three girls,” Miranda Lambert said. “We call her the Alpha Omega Annie. We introduced ourselves to her as a band and said ‘We’re the Pistol Annies’ and she said ‘Well that sounds like something I would have made up.’ We’re so thrilled that we get to honor her, that we’re even in her presence.”
Performing in front of an idol is intimidating. Pistol Annies got a little practice before the main event however, when Loretta sneaked up on them rehearsing. “It makes you want to do real, real good,” Ashley Monroe said. “We were sound checking earlier and someone pointed out that she was over in the corner listening. I looked at Ang and said ‘We’ve gotta do real, real good.’ It makes you want to step it up a notch so she’ll like you.”
Outside of their love for Loretta and her music, Miranda learned she and Loretta share another common interest they’ve bonded over. Both of them collect salt and pepper shakers.
“I was at her house and we went to the museum and she had this huge glass shelf,” Miranda revealed before the show. “She had a whole collection, hundreds of them. I’m going to ask her one day, if I get the nerve up, if we can trade a set.”
Pistol Annies performed their song “Housewife’s Prayer” before honoring Loretta with “Fist City” during their Opry debut. They closed the night by returning to the stage to perform “Coal Miner’s Daughter” alongside Loretta, Crystal Gayle and Lee Ann Womack .
