Oborokumo likely to succeed Hinton on Rock Hill City Council

The lone candidate on the rolls for Rock Hill’s Ward 1 city council seat seat says she was hand-picked by Rock Hill City Councilwoman Susie Hinton to run for the seat after Hinton said earlier this year she was moving out of the boundaries of her district.

Sandra Oborokumo, who was born in Rock Hill and has lived in the city since 1999 says she hopes to bring a fresh perspective to council.

Oborokumo said she was flattered by Hinton to be asked to run for the seat.

Filing for the seat closed last week. Oborokumo said if she’s elected to serve on council, she will bring a measured approach to governing.

Oborokumo is a retired federal employee after working 25 years with the U.S. Forest Service, and now works part-time with Safe Passage, a crisis women’s services agency in Rock Hill.

Oborkumno is a member of both Freedom Temple and Impact Churches and is the assistant secretary of Rock Hill’s chapter of the NAACP.

Filing for the seat closed last week, while the write-in period is still open.

If Oborokumo faces no opposition, she will automatically be declared the winner of the election.
