Rock Hill legislator opposing Tega Cay water, sewer rate increases

Jasmine Rutledge | WRHI.comTega Cay residents are now enlisting the help of state legislators as they battle a 67-percent water rate increase from water provider Carolina Water Service.

The company has submitted a proposal to the state Public Service Commission requesting the increase, saying it needs the additional funding to keep the water and sewer infrastructure up to date and improve its service in the area.

Rock Hill Representative Ralph Norman says that sounds nice, but the company’s service record doesn’t reflect their committment to the community.

Utilities Inc. is the parent company of Carolina Water Service. Norman says the service issues have led to some residents reporting disastrous effects on their homes.

Norman says that Carolina Water Service’s case for an increase is built around the company’s footprint across the state.

In addition, he says the company is looking to work off a nine-percent profit margin – and says that doesn’t sit well with him knowing how tough the economy is on families across the country.

[Audio clip: view full post to listen]Tega Cay residents filled a church just a few weeks ago rallying against the rate hikes — saying that despite the proposed increases, the company’s service was unacceptable.

The commission will meet December 3rd to hear Carolina Water Service’s petition to increase the rates. The 67-percent proposed increase is also paired with a 18-percent residential sewage rate increase.
