Redfearn says the suspect is a black man, last seen wearing a red shirt, red hat and gray hoodie.
K-9 units were actively searching for the man until about 5:15 p.m.
There were no injuries in the attempted robbery, and no money was stolen.
Area businesses, including Comporium Communications and WRHI, were briefly locked down after the attempted robbery. Helicopter crews from WSOC-TV and WCNC-TV were circulating the area as well.
