Two days after a Rock Hill police officer was arrested and charged for driving under the influence in Fort Mill, 28-year-old Sammy Figueroa was fired Tuesday.
In a written statement Tuesday morning, Rock Hill Police Chief John Gregory said Figueroa was terminated from the department for breaking state law and internal personnel conduct policies.
In a written statement Monday, Rock Hill Police Chief John Gregory said Figueroa has been placed on procedural suspension pending an internal investigation. That investigation has since been closed.
Fort Mill Police said Monday that just after 1 a.m. Sunday, an officer saw Figueroa speeding and swerving down Main Street and Spratt Streets in Fort Mill, crossing both the center and the fog lines. Figueroa was driving his department-issued unmarked Chevrolet Malibu.
Figueroa was issued several field sobriety tests, which a police report says Figueroa failed. He was arrested and taken to the Fort Mill Police Department for a breathalyzer, but after that machine wasn’t working, he was taken to the Tega Cay Police Department. Figueroa refused the breathalyzer test.
City officials say Figueroa has been a police officer in Rock Hill since October 2009. Earlier this year, he was nominated by his colleagues for the Officer of the Year award.
