Piedmont Medical Center celebrates 30th anniversary

Thirty years ago Tuesday, York General Hospital relocated to Rock Hill and became Piedmont Medical Center.

Piedmont is celebrated the three decades of service Tuesday afternoon. The Hospital’s Chief Executive Officer Bill Masterton told a crowded Women’s Center auditorium that Piedmont has grown from 52 physicians to 355 — and now has about 1,600 total employees.

Among those employees is Betty Jenkins, simply known as Nurse Betty, who spent 56 years with the hospital before retiring in December 2011.

Masterton thanked the hospital’s past and present employees for their service towards the health of York County citizens.

Piedmont spokeswoman Amy Faulkenberry says 45 employees have been with Piedmont since February 19th, 1983.  Just last week Piedmont’s parent company approved a 21,000 square-foot expansion of its Emergency Department.
