Rock Hill earns traffic safety award; statistics released on first round of DDACTS

The first leg of a multi-agency effort by local and state authorities to crack down on crime and traffic accidents in Rock Hill’s northeast corner closest to Interstate 77 appears to have been a success.

DDACTS, or Data Driven Approach to Traffic Safety, was a two-day effort last week that led to 467 citations, warnings and arrests — but at the same time, police say there were no collisions, violent or property crimes reported in the area during the heightened enforcement.

This week, AAA Carolinas named the City of Rock Hill as one of 15 cities Safe Traffic Communities. Police Department spokesman Lt. Brad Redfearn says this award recognizes the department’s ongoing efforts to cut down on dangerous driving.

Redfearn says even with outward efforts like DDACTS and presentations to area schools and religious groups, efforts to improve traffic safety continue behind the scenes.

Students at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte reviewed crash statistics, formal traffic safety programs and the number of law enforcement officers per capita to determine the safest cities in South Carolina.

AAA Carolinas named Goose Creek, Newberry and the town of Eloree, S.C. as grand winners for efforts to crack down on seat belt use and drunk drivers.

Redfearn says the DDACTS effort includes the Rock Hill Police Department, the South Carolina Highway Patrol and the State Transport Police.

Additional heightened enforcement is scheduled for February 12 in addition to other unannounced dates.
