United Way kicks of 2013 campaign with $1.4M goal

Local leaders behind the York County United Way’s fundraising efforts say a goal this year of raising $1.4 for area non-profits is definitely in reach.

Harvey Hawkins one of several volunteers by an effort called the 70 days of caring and tells WRHI when it comes to the agencies who benefit, a team of volunteers carefully vets the organizations.

Hawkins explains how and where the money is distributed.

Those programs include community teams, tax preparation efforts, a prescription card and a one-stop shop for the county’s homeless population called Project Connect.

Hawkins says the United Way’s operational costs run about seven to eight percent — meaning more than 90 percent of the organization’s contributions are passed on to the agencies who need the funding the most.
