York Technical College Monday opened a newly remodeled suite of rooms in its Student Services building for veterans who are students at the school.

The space is equipped with a computer lab, quiet study area and a lounge.

York Tech’s Executive Vice President Carolyn Stewart said Monday the new center reflects the three strategies that are part of the college’s mission for its students.

York County Councilman Bump Roddey, a York Tech graduate himself, said the college and the community need to make sure veterans can make the transition into the workplace.

“I know I will be coming here all the time,” said Bernard Feemster, a student who served in the U.S. Army for 10 years before coming to York Tech. “It’s obvious that a lot of thought has been put into creating this space, and making sure it would be useful to veterans.”

York Tech’s Veterans’ Services facility was made possible with the support of the South Carolina Army National Guard, the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), and members of the York Tech faculty.

In addition to the regular services offered by Veterans’ Services, the new facilities will also host weekly guest speakers from York Tech’s Counseling and Support Services, faculty, and community organizations on topics such as adjusting to college, learning strategies, and getting the most from your veterans’ benefits.
