Kenny Chesney headlined the Tortuga Music Festival over the weekend, rocking South Lauderdale Beach even with a 9:30 p.m. sea turtle protection curfew. Besides a packed house on site, people hung out of hotel and condo windows and over 60 boats anchored off the coast for Kenny’s two-hour set.
“Looks like we’ve got us a navy,” Kenny said after the concert. “If you’re a No Shoes Nation, I guess you’ve got to have one! And man, were some of those boats pretty.”
During his set, Kenny played fan favorites as well as a few special tunes like “Goin’ Coastal” and “Back Where I Come From” for the first time this year. He brought out musicians Coral Reefer and Mac McAnally to share verses on the song. Kenny also debuted “Must Be Something I Missed,” a track from his new album, Life On A Rock, out April 30, and written by Mac.
“It’s always hard to try out brand new music,” Kenny said. “Then you’re out on the beach, people are definitely in that vibe… But how often do I get to play with Mac? So when they were so receptive to the first song, I figured ‘Let’s go for it.’ I couldn’t believe how they really listened. It was great.”
Thursday night, Kenny played a show at the Wharf in Orange Beach, Alabama where he brought out special guests Sammy Hagar, Grace Potter and Emeril LaGasse. Besides singing with Grace on “You & Tequila,” the band joined Sammy for “Rock Candy,” “Finish What You Started” and “I Can’t Drive 55.”
“That’s the point of all this stuff: music is about those moments you keep forever, about friends and having fun,” Kenny said. “If you want to talk about a perfect weekend, a perfect couple dates, it doesn’t get much better than playing as the moon comes up on Fort Lauderdale beach, or getting to sing with people like Grace, Mac and Sammy.”
Kenny’s latest single, “Pirate Flag,” has cracked the Top 10 at radio. His No Shoes Nation Tour heads to Las Vegas this weekend. GAC is the official media sponsor of Kenny’s No Shoes Nation Tour. Check out photos, videos and more from the tour in our No Shoes Nation Tour section!
