One dead, one hospitalized after man hits mail carrier on U.S. 21

One person is dead and another was treated at the hospital after the woman was struck from the behind while delivering mail Wednesday.

Lance Corporal Brent Kelly of the S.C. Highway Patrol said the wreck occurred just after 2:30 p.m. on U.S. 21 near Dixon’s Leslie Road.

The mail carrier, Patricia Smith, was delivering mail on the right side of the road when a man driving northbound somehow veered off the right side of the road, striking Smith’s vehicle.

The man, who Troopers say is from Catawba, was not wearing his seat belt and died at the scene.

Late Wednesday evening, York County Coroner Sabrina Gast confirmed the man’s identity as 76-year-old Benjamin Franklin Canfield of Catawba.

Smith remains in care at Piedmont Medical Center.
