A Rock Hill teacher suspended after reportedly grabbing a student by the arm in late March appeared in court this morning.

Daniel Johns is a third grade teacher at Rosewood Elementary School and applied for a pretrial intervention program Wednesday. Pretrial intervention programs are occasionally offered to defendants with a clean criminal history. If he completes the program, the charge against him could eventually be dropped.

Johns appeared in Rock Hill Municipal Court facing a charge of third-degree assault after reportedly grabbing a nine-year-old girl on March 27.

“The administration of Rock Hill Schools is continuing with its investigation of the March 27 incident and has not made any decision about Mr. John’s employment in the district,” said district spokeswoman Elaine Baker in a statement Wednesday afternoon. “Until a decision is made, and I don’t know when that will be made, he will remain on administrative leave with pay.”
