After nearly ten months away from their families, members of the 178th Combat Engineers Battalion are returning home at the end of this month.

For weeks, rumors have flown across York County and the state about the unit’s return — but Family Readiness Group coordinator Anne Cash confirmed the May 31 arrival Wednesday.

Cash says the 161 soldiers, who are all members of the Army National Guard, first reported for duty in July and were later sent to Afghanistan.

And in those ten months, the unit, based in Rock Hill, welcomes at least one new family member to come home to when they return from active duty next Friday.

Cash tells WRHI the new arrival was planned with precision.

The unit arrived this weekend at Fort Bliss, Texas and will spend the next week re-acquainting to civilian life, jobs and family.

The 178th will fly into Eagle Air in Columbia next Friday, May 31, at 2 p.m.

Local school groups have made posters that will welcome the 178th back home to South Carolina. If you have a poster you’d like to send on, drop it off at our studios at 142 N. Confederate Avenue in Rock Hill.
