City leaders wrap up sixth and final community meeting at airport

Between potholes, ugly buildings and speeding — Rock Hill city leaders say they’ve heard it all over the last few weeks, wrapping up the last of six community meetings Tuesday night.

The six forums included a presentation on current city projects and a question-and-answer period hosted by Mayor Doug Echols and, in this case, councilman John Black.

Last night’s meeting at the Rock Hill-York County Airport gave residents time to ask questions about their city to the people charged with maintaining, building and protecting it.

Black says he’s surprised these meetings are brand new.

And while some come to complain about issues in their neighborhoods or to show their dissatisfaction with projects, Black says most appreciate their leaders’ efforts to meet them in their own communities.

And while the six meetings across the city have garnered different levels of participation, Black says every effort is made to reach out to the community — but some remain disengaged.

The idea for these community meetings was a product of a city council retreat.

Black says he would like to see more meetings — like council workshops — moved outside the confines of City Hall into community centers and public facilities across the city.
