Companies to face $33,250 in penalties for Bowater plant death

State investigators have issued more than $30,000 in fines to two companies related to the death of a man earlier this year at the former Bowater plant.

Samir Storey died from asphyxiation after a tank he and two other men were working early one morning started to fill with a liquid.

Resolute Forest Products, which owns the plant, was fined $17,850, while Industrial Piping of Pineville was fined $15,400.

Resolute spokeswoman Debbie Johnston says the company has learned from the January incident.

That morning, a crew was cleaning out what was supposed to be an empty seven-story tall scrubber tank.

Two men were able to evacuate the confined space, but Storey was suspended 14 feet bellow his co-workers.
