For the 8th time this year, people stranded on the Catawba River in York County have had to be rescued. Rock Hill Fire Department Battalion Chief Rusty Myers says a group of five 18-year-olds made their way to an island about a mile north of the Riverwalk in tubes and kayaks late Sunday night. However, Myers says the teens called for help when the water coming downstream got too high. Myers says the fire department, Rock Hill Rescue Squad, Piedmont EMS and York County Emergency Management responded to the call. He says the rescue squad got the five off the island and to safety on the shore. He says nobody was injured. Myers says local authorities have worked eight incidents this year involving 20 people who were stranded on the river.
