Comstock (right) and husband Larry Williamson were greeted in the front lobby of Tillman Hall by Winthrop’s Board of trustees, faculty, staff and alumni.

Winthrop University’s tenth president officially took office Monday morning, walking up the front steps of Tillman Hall cheers and applause from the university’s board of trustees, faculty and staff.

Dr. Jayne Marie Comstock comes to Winthrop as the former head of the American Council of Education’s Executive Leadership group in Washington.

Comstock’s first official act was to contribute to the Blue Line fund and Eagle Club — two foundations she believes in.

“We can let folks know for sure that we are putting our own personal resources in support of this institution and our student athletes,” Comstock said.

Comstock moved in to the President’s House in mid-June with her husband Larry Williamson and nine-year-old Chesapeake Bay retriever, Cocoa.

Comstock said her first day includes meeting with various university officials, faculty and students.

Comstock says she will do a lot of listening during her first year, hearing from all aspects of the campus community.

Winthrop’s former president, Dr. Anthony DiGiorgio, officially retired Sunday after 24 years leading Winthrop. DiGiorgio, now 73, will take a one-year sabbatical with his wife, Gale, before returning as President Emeritus.
