Clint Black [2] hasn’t released an album of new material since 2005, but he’s been busy, acting, writing songs, competing on Celebrity Apprentice and touring the country. He’ll release When I Said I Do exclusively at Cracker Barrel stores on August 5, featuring three new songs and re-recordings of 11 of his favorite songs. Just don’t ask him to pick one favorite.

“You can’t just name one, can you?” he told Amarillo Globe News [3]. “I can’t. It’s like, ‘Who’s your favorite kid?’ It’s nice to have that, though. If I just had one favorite, I’d think the other ones may not have been that good. I still love playing them all.”

Clint has been writing new material and hopes to release a new album in early 2014. He’s struggled, however, with finding a label to release his new music.

“Not every record company is thrilled that an artist wants to write their own songs,” he said. “My old record company was never completely thrilled about it. It was very important for me to be somewhere where they wanted me to be who I am, not because they can find the perfect song for me.”

Clint doesn’t have anything against artists who don’t write their own music. He realizes that for some, recording songs written by others may be their big break. “What I think there is, is a lot of shaping of artists,” he said. “I consider myself to be a fully-developed artist. I know who I am, what I do best. What that means to another artist may be, ‘Oh, thank God. Someone’s going to find me a hit.’ What’s authentic for me and someone else is not necessarily the same thing.”

Staying true to himself and the music he loves is important to Clint. He’s not too worried about finding success again in mainstream country music. He’s happy with who he is, what he’s accomplished so far and the music he’s making now.

“I think everyone has to redefine success no matter who you are in this day and age,” he said. “I want things to be heard and be out there, but that’s not the be-all, end-all for me. If I can find success being authentic in this age of country music, then that’s great, but first I’m going to be authentic. I won’t find success because I’m chasing it. I’ll find success because I was true to myself and my music and someone knew what to do with me to get the music out.”
