Bandit Records will release George Jones – Amazing Grace on September 10, two days before what would have been George Jones’   82nd birthday. George, a partner in Bandit Records, recorded the gospel songs featured on the album with producer Billy Sherrill in 2002, with the exception of “Great Judgment Morning,” which was produced by Brian Ahern in 1994.

The Billy Sherrill songs are the final sessions between Sherrill and George. The producer had retired and wasn’t interested in going back into the studio. George was persistent, however, and got Sherrill to return for one final project. It also marks the first time George recorded an entire Gospel project.

“Great Judgment Morning” is a song that was tacked onto the end of his Bradley Barn recording sessions. Waylon Jennings, Jessi Colter, Travis Tritt, Ricky Skaggs, Marty Stuart and Connie Smith were among those assembled during the recording with all adding their vocal interpretations of the gospel favorite.

His rendition of “Amazing Grace” is included on the project. The track was used during the video/bio segment of his Kennedy Center Honors Induction in 2008 and resulted in hundreds of calls asking for the recording, which has not been available for purchase since 2005.

George died April 26, 2013. Amazing Grace had already been planned and blessed by George before his passing.
