Luke Bryan [2] is one of the biggest stars in country music right now. His new album, Crash My Party, sold more than 500,000 units [3] in its first week and his Dirt Road Diaries Tour is selling out shows night after night. While Luke’s star is shining bright, he admits it’s hard for a woman to enjoy the same level of success in country music these days. A solo country female hasn’t had her first two singles reach the Top 10 since Taylor Swift [4] in 2007. Luke recently voiced his thoughts on the subject to Entertainment Weekly. [5]

“It’s a weird phenomenon,” Luke said. “What’s funny is that the majority of listeners are females, but then you’d feel like they would want to hear women too. I just feel like I don’t know what can be done to solve it. I think historically it’s always been that way a little bit. It feels like now is the toughest time ever for women, but I would imagine it’s always been pretty damn crummy.”

Luke thinks part of the reason women have it tougher than guys in the industry is that it’s harder for a young woman to make the rounds in honky tonks and smoky bars, especially as a teenager. He also thinks radio tours, where artists travel from station to station, often in rental cars, to play their new music are harder on females who also have to “look the part.”

“In my opinion, the girls that make it, they can wake up early at 5 a.m., throw a hat on, roll into a radio station, hang with the guys,” Luke said. “They kind of have to be able to hang with the guys but also be feminine and pretty, and it’s just a tough dynamic when you talk about that aspect. There’s probably not even any merit to what I’m saying, but it’s just stuff I’ve thought about through the years.”
