Winthrop testing new security technology

As students, faculty and staff come to Winthrop for the beginning of the fall semester, the university will be testing a new personal I-D technology.  Patrice Bruneau, Winthrop’s director of technology, says iris scanners are being tested this fall at the Macfeat Early Childhood Laboratory School, which is an on-campus preschool program where education majors are trained.

Bruneau says the technology literally takes a picture of your eyes.

Bruneau says the iris scanners may be used in the future at the Lois Rhame West Health, Physical Education and Wellness Center for swimmers.

The iris scanners use 3D technology to take a picture of a person’s eyes and then identifies about 250 unique features, about ten times more points of comparison than a fingerprint system.
