York County could name new manager as early as tonight

Tonight — A Nationwide search for the next York County Manager could come to a close, as council holds in-person interview with the five finalists for the job.

All five were present Monday night at a meet-and-greet with county staff, council and the public ahead of tonight’s closed-door meetings.

York County Council chairman Britt Blackwell said he understands the candidates do not all come from large municipalities and that York County, for some, is a step into a large market.

“You’re going to have people who move vertically — not laterally — from counties our same size or larger” Blackwell said. “In cases like that, we would wonder what they had done wrong at their previous county.”

The finalists include Robert Bartolotta, former City Manager of Sarasota, Fla.; Rick Chaffin, former Deputy City Manager of McKinney, Texas; Joe Fivas, Town Manager of Indian Trail, N.C.; Steve Layson, Chief Administrative Officer of Bib County, Ga.; and Bill Shanahan, Deputy City Administrator of Augusta, Ga.

Tonight, council will meet with the five in executive session.

Council could make their decision as early as tonight.
