Alan Jackson [2] has won two GRAMMY Awards and sold nearly 60 million records worldwide with his traditional country sound. While he doesn’t dislike the music being played on mainstream country radio, he tells the Baltimore Sun [3]that he wouldn’t mind hearing some “real country” too.

“There’s some good music, good songwriting and good artists out there, but there’s really no country stuff left,” he said. “It’s always been that constant pop-country battle. I don’t think it’s ever going to change. What makes me sad today is that I think the real country, real roots-y traditional stuff, may be gone. I don’t know if it’ll ever be back on mainstream radio. You can’t get it played anymore.”

Alan will release his latest project, The Bluegrass Album, on September 24. For him, the album is not only something he’s wanted to do since the mid-‘90s, it’s also a tribute to the American roots music that he loves.

“I wanted to pay my respects to it because I think it’s a great genre and it’s real close to country,” he told the paper. “Bluegrass is one of the last American music [genres] that’s stayed somewhat close to its roots.”

Whether he’s making a bluegrass project or a more traditional country-sounding album, Alan is devoted to the art of songwriting. “Every time you make an album or write a song, it’s a challenge to do it,” he said. “I think that’s still it – making the records, whether it’s country or whatever it is. Making the new music has always been the most fun for me.”
