Sheryl Crow has spent the last seven years living in Nashville but she’s only just come around to the idea of recording a country music album. Her first country project, Feels Like Home, will be released on September 10.

“This album feels very natural,” she told Voice of America. “It’s an extension of who I am, where I live. It doesn’t seem like too big of a departure. I’ve been absorbed into the city limits of Nashville.”

Sheryl’s debut country single, “Easy,” reached the Top 30 on Billboard’s country chart. A couple of her country friends, Emmylou Harris and Brad Paisley, helped convince her to make the leap to country music.

Brad told her often that her early songs would be country if they were released today. Following her performance of “Coal Miner’s Daughter” with Loretta Lynn and Miranda Lambert at the 2010 CMA Awards, he prodded her again to make the record. “After that, he came to me and said, ‘Now, will you come home to the format you belong to?’” Sheryl said.

Brad co-wrote the song “Waterproof Mascara” with Sheryl and it’s on Feels Like Home. The album is Sheryl’s first where she collaborated with another songwriter on each track. Brad gave her some simple advice to take with her to her writing sessions. “Leave out the fat and get to the imagery,” Sheryl said.

As she dove into the country scene, she realized pop wasn’t the only genre that changed. “The country format is more pop than pop was when I came up” she said. “I love the country format.”
