This coming Saturday, Sept. 21, marks the International Day of Peace, and Wednesday, students at Sullivan Middle School in Rock Hill marked their own day of peace with a giant, football field-sized peace sign on campus.

Nearly a thousand students took part in marking a human peace symbol, marking the conclusion of weeks’ worth of lessons on treating others with respect, dignity and sincerity.

Eighth-grade student Davis Johnson explains those lessons include posting positive comments about each other on social media.

Sullivan Middle is an IB, or International Baccalaureate school, and many lessons are taught with a global perspective.

“Our students will be learning about peace around the world and they will be challenged to think about what peace means to them and reflect on how attitudes towards peace impact the world in which we live,” said Sullivan principal Michael Waiksnis.

Johnson says there’s a simple way that everyone can change how they treat others with respect.

The International Day of Peace is a global event that includes concerts, rallies, festivals and a global peace wave held at noon local time.
