An elementary school teacher in Clover got the surprise of the year Tuesday morning after she was singled out in front of her colleagues — and students at a school-wide assembly.

Emily Boyd teaches fifth grade at Kinard Elementary School and was presented with $1,000 in school supplies in a grant program through warehouse giant Office Max.

Boyd said this is the first time in her 21 years of teaching that someone has gone out of their way to support her classroom of this magnitude financially.

Office Max estimates that each year, the average teacher spends $1,000 in his or her own money to purchase classroom supplies. Boyd is now one of 31,000 educators recognized in the seven years since the program started.

Two years ago, another teacher at Kinard Elementary School was awarded a similar grant.

This year, in addition to the supplies Boyd received, another box of supplies donated by Office Max customers at the checkout register are also given to the school.

Nationwide, 952 teachers were recognized October 1. A total of seven were recognized in South Carolina.
