Demolition of the former Fort Mill High School site on Banks Street will get underway next week after a developer with plans to rebuild the site walked away from those plans Tuesday.
In a written statement Tuesday, Fort Mill Schools spokeswoman Kelly McKinney said Standard Pacific Homes declined to move forward with the purchase of the 6.3-acre site.
In September, the district and Standard Pacific signed a letter of intent to buy the property for $95,000 per acre and agreed to demolish the property at their own expense. The company’s plan, district officials said, was to build an active-adult community on the property.
The plan also called for Standard Pacific to pay for any asbestos abatement of the property.
“We’re just very disappointed Standard Pacific Homes decided to walk away so late in the process,” Fort Mill Schools Superintendent Chuck Epps said. “Not only was this offer a win-win for our taxpayers, it seemed to fit perfectly with the needs of the community.”
Asbestos abatement on the property will start November 11 with a projected completion date of February 2014.
