York County-area firefighters battled a grass fire that spread and destroyed between 20 and 25 acres of land in the Catawba community Friday afternoon.

At approximately 2:10 p.m., Lesslie Fire Department Assistant Chief Wayne Reeves said crews were called to the 2900 block of Neely Store Road.

Three U.S. Forestry Commission Fire Plows were called into help dig ditches to mitigate the spread of the fire that is now under control, while three U.S. Forest Service personnel will remain on site until the fire is fully extinguished.

The fire was likely caused by someone burning brush in the area, Reeves said, but an origin of the blaze has not yet been determined.

York County 911 Director Gary Loflin said both the Lesslie and Oakdale Fire Departments were dispatched to fight the fire.

Earlier in the day, the National Weather Service issued a Fire Danger Statement for York County.

“Relative humiditiees have fallen mainly into the 20 to 25 percent range across the Western Carolinas and Northeast Georgia¬† this afternoon. This has heightened the fire danger today,” the alert, which included York and Chester counties read. “No attempts should be made to start outdoor fires this afternoon.”
