Is Hee Haw — the late ’60s/early ’70s television variety show loved by many country fans – headed to Broadway? According to the New York Post, yes! Last month, a group of Broadway producers gathered in New York for a reading of the proposed script. It left quite the impression on those in attendance, according to the Post.

The show is being developed by Steve Buchanan, head of Opry Entertainment Group that owns the Grand Ole Opry. The script is by Robert Horn, who wrote the musical 13 with Jason Robert Brown. Music and lyrics are by top Nashville songwriters Shane McAnally and Brandy Clark.

The Post reports those gathered loved the score assembled by Shane and Brandy. While the TV show was full of sketches and music, the musical will be a story about a woman from Kornfield Kounty and her boyfriend, destined to be married but not until she sees the world first. Several of the characters made famous from the TV show appear in the musical, including Grandpa Jones, Misty Rowe, Lulu Roman and Junior Samples.

Hee Haw: The Musical is expected to open on Broadway in the spring of 2015.
