Old Crow Medicine Show and Holly Williams have been added to MerleFest 2014, set for April 24-27 on the campus of Wilkes Community College in Wilkesboro, North Carolina. Founded in 1988 in memory of the late Eddy Merle Watson, son of the late American music legend Doc Watson, MerleFest is a celebration of “traditional plus” music.
Old Crow Medicine Show got its start playing on street corners in New York state and through Canada. They ended up in Boone, North Carolina, where they caught the eye of Doc Watson while playing in front of a pharmacy. He extended an invitation for them to play at MerleFest, helping launch their career. The band is set to perform as part of the Friday lineup.
Holly Williams will make her first MerleFest appearance on Thursday night of the festival. The daughter of Hank Williams, Jr. and granddaughter of Hank Williams, Sr., she has built her career by not trying to live up to her famous legacy – or play it down. She’s earned respect as an artist in her own right over the course of many years, building an international fan base in the process.
Alan Jackson will also perform during MerleFest. Additional performers will be announced in the coming weeks with the full lineup available at www.merlefest.org/lineup. Tickets can be purchased at www.merlefest.org or by calling 1-800-343-7857.
